Mold Damage And Gutters
Believe it or not, a common cause of mold damage is gutter damage. You can avoid water damage and mold damage just by keeping your gutters clean and in good working order. The job of a gutter is to keep water off of and away from your home. Gutters that are clogged will cause water to pool on the roof. This water can get behind shingles and into your home. This type of water damage usually goes unnoticed until it becomes mold damage. Similarly, gutters that are damaged can also allow water into the home. Again, unless you discover water dripping from a ceiling, this water often goes behind walls where it’s not detected until it becomes a mold damage problem.
You can prevent mold damage by keeping your gutters cleaned out and replacing damaged gutters. Spring is a good time to do this since gutters take a beating during winter months. This includes downspouts. Downspouts should carry water at least 3-5 feet away from your home. If water is allowed to pool at the base of your home, it can seep into your foundation and/or basement – which can cause mold damage there. Mold damage can cause a lot of problems with the structure of your home if it gets into your foundation.
We recommend gutters are cleaned out at least twice a year. Checking your gutters after heavy storms is also a good idea. High winds can cause debris to collect in your gutters. Anything that prevents your gutters from working correctly can cause a mold threat to your home – this includes things like tennis balls or other objects that may be thrown in that direction.
Do not clean your gutters if storms are a current threat in the area or if you are unable to physically make the trip up a ladder. Climbing a ladder when storms threaten the area isn’t a good idea, and there are gutter cleaning services available in most areas. In fact, many landscaping services also offer gutter cleaning.
