Mold Growth in the Laundry Room

Mold is commonly associated with rotting food or decomposing materials, but mold can be found growing just about anywhere. With just trace amounts of water mold can take root and continue to multiply. Mold is commonly thought of as being found in the back of the refrigerator or outside, however another commonplace that mold can be found is in the laundry room.

You might be surprised that mold is commonly found in the laundry room, but it actually makes a lot of sense. The reason mold is so commonly found in laundry rooms is because there is a lot of water use within the room, paired with little ventilation. The lack of ventilation in the laundry room prevents water from evaporating quickly, which in return allows a source for mold to begin to grow. Taking certain steps within the room can make sure mold does not take over your laundry room.

  • Ventilation – Keep the area well ventilated. If you have windows in the laundry room keep them open when possible. However, if your laundry room is like most you don’t have windows. In these scenarios buying a fan or a dehumidifier for the room will keep the area dried out and prevent mold growth.
  • Finish Laundry Loads – It is important to make sure that when you are doing laundry you are finishing loads. Leaving wet loads of laundry sitting within the room allows mold and mildew to grow within the clothing. Often times if laundry is left over night in the washer, it will begin to smell and this is in result to the mold and mildew starting to grow.
  • Keep a Close Eye on Pipes – Of course with all washers there are pipes and tubes that pump water into the machine as well as remove the water when the machine is done washing. If these pipes are not hooked up securely or if they are rattled out of place it can cause a drip or even a leak. In return this will cause water damage, as well as mold damage within the room.

On top of taking preventative steps to keep mold out of your home, it is also important to check periodically to make sure mold isn’t taking root within your laundry room. Make sure to check behind washer and dryer machines, as well as other corners and hard to reach places to keep an eye out for mold growth. If you should find mold within the room it is important to call a mold restoration company to safely remove the mold.
